An absolute must-see, especially for baseball fans, is 1994's Baseball, an 18-plus hour documentary by renowned filmmaker Ken Burns. Originally telecast on PBS, Baseball traces the history of "America's Pastime" using quite a bit of previously unseen material from a wide variety of sources. The documentary is divided into "innings," each segment covering roughly a decade of the game's happenings and development.
The film, although focused on baseball, also provides an historic perspective as it related to the game. Many notable performers, historians, politicians and relatives of baseball legends as well as Hall of Famers are featured.
Burns, noted producer of another celebrated documentary, The Civil War, has undoubtedly proven himself the master of the genre. Even baseball aficionados who feel there's little or nothing they didn't know will be surprised.
