The 1951 MGM baseball comedy, Angels in the Outfield, stars Paul Douglas, Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn.
Once again mired in last place, Guffy McGovern, the combative manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, has taken to roaming the outfield at Forbes Field at night, venting his frustration. One night however, his rant is answered by the voice of the Archangel Gabriel, who offers to turn the Pirates into winners if McGovern agrees to curtail the teams' cursing and fighting. Although naturally wary, Guffy has little choice but to go along with the "heavenly" proposition, and as much to his surprise as anyone's, the team does indeed begin to win.
Angels in the Outfield is a delightful film, never resorting to over-sentimentality or predictability. Douglas is especially effective and convincing as the hard-edged dugout veteran, who remains skeptical of the entire affair, but slowly accepts it for what it is.
