1963's Beach Party, from American International Pictures (AIP), is frequently given credit for being the first of the "beach party" films which enjoyed their brief heyday during the early-to-mid 1960s. Starring a recognizable cast (Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Robert Cummings and Dorothy Malone), Beach Party epitomizes the mindless, innocent summer fun of the period. Eventually, there were seven feature films produced using the "beach party" theme.
The music for Beach Party was a rarity in that the songs were written exclusively for the film and not "borrowed" from the usual sources (Top 40 radio, pop standards, etc.) Three numbers were composed by Gary Usher and Roger Christian, who were both noted collaborators with Brian Wilson on several early Beach Boys classics.
Four of the film's motorcycle gang, the Ratz and Mice, appeared in six of the subsequent seven "Beach Party" movies.
