One of the more popular and enduring baseball comedies is the 1976's The Bad News Bears. The success of the original was followed by two sequels, a remake and even a short-lived TV series.
Morris Buttermaker, an unrepentant alcoholic and former minor-league ballplayer, finds himself placed in charge of a motley crew of Little Leaguers. When their opening game finds them down 26-0 before even recording an out, Buttermaker realizes he has his work cut out for him. Desperate, he brings in some new players, including a 12-year old girl pitcher, as well as a juvenile delinquent-in-training outfielder who is a local playground legend.
Surprisingly, the new lineup meshes and the once hapless Bears advance to the championship game.
The Bad News Bears features an outstanding cast, led by Walter Matthau as the gruff but lovable Buttermaker, along with Tatum O'Neal as the star pitcher. Ms. O'Neal, in just her second feature role following her Academy Award-winning debut in Paper Moon, is perfect as the quintessential tomboy.
