Movie Description

Adapted from Jim Piersall's autobiography, the 1957 drama, Fear Strikes Out tells the story of Piersall's life and career as a major league baseball player.

Jim Piersall was, by all accounts, destined for baseball greatness. Former teammate Ted Williams, not given to hyperbole, once claimed that Piersall, "has as much natural ability as any ballplayer I've ever seen." His outstanding feats on the field were frequently offset by unexplainable antics, both away from the game and sometimes during the game.

Eventually, Piersall was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder, perhaps exacerbated by a domineering, demanding father. The film focuses more on the relationship between father and son than on baseball, with agreeable results.

Anthony Perkins (pre-Psycho) is excellent in the title role, while Karl Malden is impressive as the overbearing, but eventually supportive father.

S.I.M Rating: 8.11 out of 10
