Helping to serve as a reminder that the term "fan" is derived from "fanatic" is the 1996 film thriller, The Fan. An overly dedicated fan of baseball's San Francisco Giants is the basis for this highly entertaining film.
Robert DeNiro stars as Gil Renard, a down-on-his-luck knife salesman who discovers too late that his devotion to his beloved Giants is about to cost him everything, including his son and his job. Nevertheless, he becomes fixated on the new CF for the Giants, Bobby Rayburn (Wesley Snipes), so much so that he ends up murdering another player who Renard blames for Rayburn's on-field struggles.
DeNiro and Snipes are just two of The Fan's brilliant cast. Other notable performers include Ellen Barkin, John Leguizamo and Patti D'Arbanville.
