Produced by ESPN and directed by Peter Bogdanovich, the 2004 film, Hustle, chronicles the major league baseball career of all-time hits leader Pete Rose in the latter stages of his career.
Rose (whose nickname, "Charlie Hustle," gives the film it's title) is portrayed wonderfully by Tom Sizemore, who captures the gritty determination of Rose and does a better-than-expected job of duplicating Rose's unique mannerisms. The film follows Rose's tenure as player-manager of the Cincinnati Reds, during which he allegedly violated one of baseball's "Golden Rules" by placing bets on the outcomes of games, especially his own team. Rose first denied the allegations, but later recanted.
The debate still continues as to whether or not Rose should be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The film doesn't take sides other than to cite the precedent of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal.
