Penny Marshall (director) and Tom Hanks (Jimmy Dugan), who'd teamed up in 1988's Big, reunited for the 1992 comedy/drama A League Of Their Own, the story of a women's professional baseball league which competed from 1943-54.
Several baseball executives came up with the idea of bankrolling the venture, hoping to fill the void in major league baseball created by so many stars going off to the military. Hanks is this particular teams' manager, an alcoholic former big-leaguer who takes the job because his reputation is so damaged no one else will give him a chance.
A very entertaining and well-made film, many of the actors not only had to learn "how" to play, they also wound up doing most of their own stunts. The cast is excellent, with such notables as Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Lori Petty and Jon Lovitz all turning in splendid performances.
