Reminiscent of TV's The Office in style and structure, the 2007 animated film, Surf's Up, is a joint effort between Sony Pictures Animation and National Geographic Films.
Obviously targeted towards a young audience, Surf's Up is heavy on junior-high humor and sight gags. The storyline is nearly identical to several other "kids on a quest" films, only in this instance it happens to be "penguins on a quest."
Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel and Jeff Bridges "star" as the voices of the heroes, with the annual Big Z Memorial Surf competition as the backdrop.
The kids will enjoy Surf's Up, and the animation, at times, is very cleverly done. Animated film veterans Ash Brannon and Chris Buck co-directed Surf's Up, which received a 2008 Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
