Movie Description
Legendary baseball Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean is the subject of the 1952 film, The Pride of St. Louis, starring Dan Dailey, Joanne Dru and Richard Crenna. The film is fairly faithful to actual events in Dean's life, which was colorful, to say the least.
Discovered pitching for an amateur team in his native Arkansas, Dean soon began making headlines as a charter member of the famed "Gashouse Gang" of the St. Louis Cardinals. Joined by his younger brother Paul (Daffy), the Dean brothers became the talk of baseball both with their pitching prowess and their (especially Dizzy's) antics.
The last National League pitcher to win 30 games (1934), Dean's career was derailed by a big toe injury at age 27, although he went on to attain tremendous popularity as a broadcaster, both on radio and television.
