The suicide of a former lover provides the impetus for 1988's Stealing Home, a baseball/drama starring Mark Harmon and Jodie Foster.
Once a hot-shot baseball prospect, Billy Wyatt (Harmon) is now in his 30s and facing a multitude of problems, both personal and financial. When he learns that his first girlfriend, Katie (Foster) has committed suicide, Wyatt is forced to reassess his life choices and map a plan for the future.
Through a series of flashbacks, viewers learn of the Billy-Katie relationship and how its affected both individuals, as well as the role of Billy's late father, who re-enters Billy's thoughts and motivates him to make something of his life.
At times approaching overt sentimentality, Stealing Home, thanks largely to excellent performances by the cast, instead evolves into a very entertaining film, bittersweet and touching.
