The 2008 comedy film, Ready? OK!, explores the dilemma faced by a single mother (Carrie Preston) whose 10-year old son, Joshua (Lurie Poston) shows no interest in school sports but instead expresses a desire to be a cheerleader. The situation becomes accelerated when Joshua comes to school on "Influential Role Model Day" dressed as Maria Von Trapp.
Ready? OK! is seen primarily from the mother's point of view, and the struggles she undergoes in realizing and accepting her son is "different."
Director James Vasquez handles the potentially controversial subject matter tastefully and with restraint. The underlying message of acceptance of differences isn't heavy-handed or overt, but instead gently gets across without over-dramatizing or pandering.
The ramifications of over-worked and over-busy parents is perhaps a "subplot" of Ready? OK!, and Preston is almost perfect as the earnest, well-meaning, but "trying-to-juggle-a-dozen-balls-at-once" modern mom.
