Movie Description

Directed by Tom Hooper, who would go on to do the same the following year with The King's Speech, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director, The Damned United is a sports drama adapted from a novel by David Peace.

At one time a despised critic of the Leeds United football team, Brian Clough suddenly finds himself as manager of the United, forcing him to not only wade into the enemy camp, but also reassess himself. Through flashbacks, viewers are shown the genesis of Clough's hatred for the Ltd., which regularly and decisively bested Derby, his former team. The new arrangement begins badly, with Ltd. players, almost to a man, opposing Clough at every turn.

The Damned United features first-rate performances by not only Michael Sheen as Clough, but also by Timothy Spall, Elizabeth Carling and Colm Meaney.
