Women's college basketball was a much different world in 1972, with the sport still developing. The 2011 film, The Mighty Macs, relives what possibly was the last "true" sports Cinderella story.
Immaculata, a small, all-female Catholic university located 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia, took a huge gamble in 1971 when it hired 23-year old Cathy Rush as head basketball coach.Rush's hiring was a monumental risk, given her limited coaching experience (zero), and Immaculata was going up against much larger, better-funded women's programs.
Despite these obstacles, Rush quickly proved herself by leading the Mighty Macs to unprecedented success, including three consecutive national championships from 1972-74. Immaculata, under Rush's guidance, appeared in six consecutive Final Four's, which coincidentally were Rush's only six seasons at the Malvern, Pa. school. Overall, Rush compiled an unheard-of career won-loss mark of 149-15.
