S.I.M Rating: 8.6 out of 10 (5 Votes)
Cast: Harold Lloyd, Jobyna Ralston and Brooks Benedict
Starring silent-film legend Harold Lloyd, the 1925 comedy, The Freshman remains one of Lloyd's most popular films, and was honored in being selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion into the National Film Registry.
Lloyd, portraying the early 20th-century version of the "nerd,' hopes to win friends and impress the girls by going out for the football team. Oblivious to the fact, he quickly becomes the laughingstock of everyone except Peggy (Jobyna Ralston), the daughter of his landlady. Lloyd stumbles from one humiliation to the next, climaxed by an embarrassing "wardrobe" malfunction at the big college dance. Despite everything, Lloyd only redoubles his football aspirations, and becomes the hero (accidentally) in the "Big Game."
Modern viewers may be too impatient with having to read the subtitles, but for the ones who persevere, The Freshman is definitely worth the effort.
