Movie Description

Co-produced and directed by the legendary Clint Eastwood, 2009's sports drama/biography, Invictus, tells the story of the recently released from prison Nelson Mandela's efforts to convince South Africans to support the nation's rugby union team, the Springboks.

Imprisoned for 27 years, Mandela is faced with the daunting task of balancing his nation's racial tensions while also dealing with everyday issues such as unemployment and crime. Attending a rugby match involving the Springboks, Mandela is appalled by the overwhelming prejudice directed by the largely black crowd towards the predominantly white rugby team. Arranging a meeting with Pienaar, captain of the Springboks, Mandela convinces the initially skeptical athlete that success in the upcoming World Cup competition will be a giant step towards unifying the nation.

Inspired by a poem Mandela shares with him, Pienaar motivates his teammates, and the Springboks surpass all expectations by defeating the heavily-favored New Zealand All Blacks squad to capture the championship.

Invictus features a standout cast including Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.
