Movie Description

The often brutal sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the backdrop for Warrior, with a storyline involving two ultra-competitive brothers seeking to reconcile not only their own touchy relationship, but also coming to grips with their father and his demons.

Recently discharged Marine Tommy (Tom Hardy) visits his recovering alcoholic father, Paddy (Nick Nolte), but the reunion doesn't go well, with Tommy unwilling to forgive his father for a multitude of previous sins. Angry and frustrated, Tommy, almost on a whim, meets up at a gym with a professional MMA fighter and beats him senseless, creating a sensation when video of the beatdown goes viral on the Internet. Paddy's oldest son, a former Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter, falls on difficult times of his own, and the two brothers find themselves matched against each other in a tournament.

Fairly predictable, but well-paced and resisting overt sentimentality, Warrior owes much to such similarly-themed films as Rocky and The Wrestler.

Nolte received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his realistic portrayal of the flawed, yet supportive father.
