The surf is definitely up in the 20th Century Fox drama, Chasing Mavericks, starring Gerard Butler, Jonny Weston and Elisabeth Shue. Co-directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile) and Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter, Gorillas in the Mist), Chasing Mavericks tells the story of legendary surfer Jay Moriarity, who drowned just off the Indian Ocean's Maldive Islands in 2001.
Similar to the familiar coming-of-age film The Karate Kid, Chasing Mavericks features incredible cinematography with plenty of big waves, daredevil surfers and picturesque coastlines. Butler plays a mentoring character (Frosty Hesson) mindful of Karate Kid's Mister Miyagi while Weston portrays Moriarity, who died one day short of his 23rd birthday while diving alone. The film relates their fortuitous introduction (with Hesson rescuing the 8-year old Moriarity from drowning) and subsequent brutal training regimen to prepare Moriarity for his quest to conquer the Mavericks, a legendary California surfing location that Hesson has already successfully surfed. Hesson's approach is also reminiscent of Karate Kid's organic, minimalist philosophy, and the film's two stars are convincing as they take on monster waves and learn from each other along the journey.
