Highly acclaimed for its realism and emotional power, The Third Half is a stirring sports drama set in Yugoslavia, circa World War II. Based on the true story of Neta Cohen, a wealthy, attractive young Jewish Holocaust survivor, The Third Half delves not only into international soccer but also touches deeply upon the turbulent and often puzzling political climate of the era.
The Macedonian Football club has long been the laughingstock of the sport, and in an effort to improve their chances, the successful but controversial German-Jewish coach Rudolph Spitz is hired. He manages to turn the club into a competitive squad, but when the deportation of Jews by the Nazis begins, the club's future takes on a darker, less important role. When Neta Cohen and Kosta, the star of the team, fall in love, the implications have an effect far beyond a football match.
The Third Half draws many parallels between the cultural upheaval of the time period and the nearly identical circumstances more than two decades later.
