Fans of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) will thoroughly enjoy The Philly Kid, a sports drama/action film directed by Jason Connery, British actor-director and son of screen legend Sean Connery.
Dillon McCabe is an NCAA Wrestling champion, but finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and is wrongly charged and convicted with the murder of a police officer. He spends the next ten years in a Louisiana prison before he is paroled, whereupon he returns to his hometown of Baton Rouge. Despite his determination to go straight, he instead finds himself mixed up in the local fight scene, trying to earn enough money to help a childhood friend who has run afoul of some unforgiving loan sharks. As his star rises among the dark, seedy fight world he now inhabits, he discovers that he's the victim of a set-up, and realizes that the sport he once loved has become a real life-or-death battle.
Incredibly realistic fight scenes are The Philly Kid's strengths, with edge-of-the-seat action galore. When the script strays outside of the fight cage however, the film suffers despite decent performances by the cast.
