Cast: Matthew Broderick, Virginia Madsen, Alan Alda
Making its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, Diminished Capacity is a comedy that benefits greatly from a stellar cast, featuring Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda and Virginia Madsen.
Broderick portrays a journalist from Chicago who's gradually losing his memory. Seeking to reconnect with his past in the hopes of finding a cure, or at least some answers, he makes a trip to his boyhood home. Once there, he forms a bond with his uncle (Alda), who's suffering from early-stage Alzheimer's. Their initial scenes together are both convincing and touching, setting the tone for the rest of the film. Broderick also becomes re-acquainted with an old girlfriend (Madsen) who provides him with hope and encouragement.
On an impulse, the unlikely trio embark upon a trip to a sports collectible show where they hope to make a bundle by selling a rare vintage baseball card, but instead encounter crooked dealers and an atmosphere of mistrust. The wheelings and dealings involving "memories" in the form of sports memorabilia dovetails nicely with the afflictions of Broderick and Alda.
