Snowboarder, directed by Olias Barco, is a French sports drama/adventure exploring the world of international snowboarding. The photography, frequently breathtaking, features the picturesque Alps in all their pristine wintry glory.
Gaspard, the film's hero, is a young snowboarder working as an apprentice in a ski shop, biding his time while awaiting the big opportunity. Mega-talented, but with little or no motivation, Gaspard's big break (or so he believes) comes about in the guise of his snowboarding idol Josh, who persuades the naive teenager to quit his dead-end job and join him in Gstaad, the Mecca of Snowboarding. Gstaad, at first, seems to provide everything Gaspard has dreamed of, but looks can be deceiving, as both he and the audience soon discovers.
Snowboarder is at its best during the thrilling downhill action segments. Viewers will be gripping the edges of their seats as boarders and skiiers schuss with abandon down treacherous slopes. It's when the film veers into drama and romance that things drag along maddeningly.
