Known primarily for action-thrillers, Korean director Kang Woo Suk switches gears in the sports drama, Glove, an inspirational film that features the tried-and-true "underdog" template to impart valuable life lessons.
Baseball star Sang Nam has tested his superiors' patience once too often with his boozing and carousing ways. In an attempt to rehabilitate the fallen hero, it's arranged for him to take over the managerial chores of a youth baseball team comprised of hearing-impaired athletes. Despite their marked lack of ability, Sang is nonetheless impressed with their determination and enthusiasm, so much so that he discovers the thankless task is gradually exorcising his own demons. Also helping to make his new job bearable is the female assistant he's been saddled with, Ms. Na.
Glove has ample opportunity to devolve into the stereotypical "us-against-the-world" movie, but thanks to Suk's deft direction and an outstanding cast, the film instead avoids the sappiness and weary cliches many similar productions fall back on. Instead, it rewards maximum effort, regardless of the outcome.
