Based on a true story, the action-biographical film Rush relates the rivalry between Formula One racing champions James Hunt and Niki Lauda during the 1976 racing season. Peter Morgan wrote the screenplay and Ron Howard directs, with Chris Hemsworth (Hunt) and Daniel Bruhl (Lauda) starring as the mercurial racers.
Lauda's horrific crash during the 1976 German Grand Prix was expected to end the three-time F1 Austrian champion's career, but despite severe burns to his head and face, as well as extensive damage to his lungs from inhaling toxic fumes, he insisted on returning just six weeks later, finishing fourth in the Italian Grand Prix. Going into the Japanese Grand Prix, the final race of the season, Lauda, despite missing two races, held a three-point lead over Hunt, who was victorious in both the Canadian and U.S. Grand Prix events.
Driving in a torrential downpour, Lauda completed just two laps before retiring, feeling the conditions were too hazardous, allowing Hunt to finish third and capturing the championship by a single point.
