Noted Hong Kong director-producer Johnnie To is the force behind Motorway, an action-racing film directed by To protege Cheang Pou-soi and starring Shawn Yue, Guo Xiaodong and Anthony Wong, also familiar To performers.
The shadowy and dangerous streets of Hong Kong provides the setting for Motorway, in which there is an extremely lucrative and competitive underground network of "getaway drivers" who transport virtually anything in specially modified vehicles. The activity keeps the special unit (the Stealth Riders) of the Hong Kong Police devoted to eradicating the practice constantly busy, and finding elite drivers (on both sides) is an ongoing process.
One such over-eager new recruit for the Stealth unit is Cheung (Yue) who, although well-intentioned, arrests the wrong getaway driver, Sun (Xiaodong), who is a legend in his profession. The incident sparks a street war between the two factions, with hair-raising car chases and spectacular crashes and stunts certain to keep audiences on the edge of their seat. A chastened Cheung is assigned to learn the ins-and-outs of the Stealth Riders from a master of the activity (Wong), who provides an almost "Mr. Miyagi"-type role model for the green-behind-the-ears Cheung.
