The world of soap-box derby racing is the focus of Derby Dogs, a family-friendly adventure film directed and co-written by New Zealander Tony Simpson. Simpson makes his directorial debut on Derby Dogs following stints as assistant director in such films as The Chronicles of Narnia and The Other Side of Heaven.
Despite the objections of his mother, young Ben Walker, harassed by local bullies, seeks vengeance by secretly entering the local soap-box derby. Ben's motivation is simple; to honor the memory of his recently-deceased father, with whom he'd planned building and racing a "car" in the event. Ben's somewhat rag-tag group of friends eagerly agree to assist him, with several starts-and-stops threatening to sabotage the operation before it even begins in earnest.
Against overwhelming obstacles, Ben and his motley crew finally complete the building and testing of the racer, and by the day of the big race, even his stubborn mother is squarely in his corner.
Cast members include Tandi Wright, Vince Martin and Dai Henwood.
