Movie Description

Breakaway is a 2011 ice hockey/coming-of-age film that veers away from the traditional sports drama simply by the subject matter, which involves a young Sikh man’s ambition to become a professional ice hockey player.

Raised in orthodox Sikh culture, young Rajveer was forbidden to cut his hair, and wearing a turban kept him from pursuing his dreams, namely ice hockey. As a teenager however, he went against his family’s wishes and cut his hair, as well as abandoning his father’s expectations that he join the family business. Finding his place in the sport difficult, Rajveer eventually forms his own team, made up entirely of fellow Sikhs.

Breakaway addresses unfamiliar (at least to most audiences) issues such as the obstacles facing immigrants, and does so in an honest, entertaining manner.
