Movie Description

College football’s popularity developed rapidly just after World War II, and one of the reasons was Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch of the Universities of both Wisconsin and Michigan. The 1953 film, Crazylegs, tells Hirsch’s story from high school on to the NFL.

Hirsch, who plays himself in the film, earned his nickname with his shifty, unpredictable running style which dazzled opponents and captured fans’ attention at a time when college football was basically "three yards and a cloud of dust." Playing for two different colleges wasn’t that unusual at the time, with many players switching schools after returning from military service.

Hirsch is remarkably natural, not generally the case when an actor portrays themself. Lloyd Nolan is effective as Hirsch’s coach, while football greats Bob Waterfield and Larry Brink appear in cameos.
