Movie Description
In ice hockey parlance, a "goon" is a player, usually not very skilled, whose primary assignment is to rough up, or at least get very physical with, any opponent who does the same with his own teams’ best player. Such an individual is the focus of the film, Goon, from E1 Entertainment.
Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but very friendly and personable, Doug Glatt manages to stumble into his new profession quite accidentally when he takes out a player (with a headbutt, no less) who went into the stands to confront Doug’s friend. Glatt’s "heroics" catch the attention of a minor league hockey team, and soon he’s offered a contract to serve as the teams goon.
Goon, despite its frequent glorification of sports violence, nonetheless has several warm moments, especially as Glatt begins to realize the affect his over-the-top physicality has on the way people he cares for is perceived.
Seann William Scott is believable and effective as the Goon, with an able supporting cast, led by Liev Schreiber, Alison Pill, Kim Coates and Eugene Levy turning in fine performances as well.
