Movie Description
More of a documentary or a "You-are-there"-type film than a conventional script-and-storyline movie, Le Mans uses actual footage from the 1970 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s longest actively held auto endurance race.
Steve McQueen stars as Michael Delaney, a racer who favors the Porsche 911S, and who was involved in a deadly crash in the previous Le Mans race and is haunted by dreams and flashbacks of the incident, in which a fellow racer was killed. The film’s dialogue is minimal at most, with the real story told via excellently-filmed footage of both the non-stop racing action as well as of the picturesque French region that hosts the annual event.
The film has developed a cult following due primarily to the realism of the footage, a refreshing change from contemporary computer-generated special effects. Of course, the presence of McQueen, the epitome of "cool," is also a factor.
