Movie Description
One of the better baseball films to not receive widespread exposure, 1987’s Long Gone is a made-for-HBO underrated gem, worthy of dusting off.
Set in the late 1950s, Long Gone is the tale of the Tampico Stogies, an under-the-radar minor league baseball team struggling for recognition and the league pennant. An excellent cast, including William Petersen, Virginia Madsen and Dermont Mulroney, the film features most of the usual stereotypical characters and scenarios expected in films of the genre, but the performances are solid and the pacing brisk. The baseball scenes are as realistic and believable as any baseball film before or since.
Directed by Martin Davidson (The Lords of Flatbush, Picket Fences), Long Gone received almost unanimous critical kudos, and although not an easy film to track down, the effort is definitely worth it.
