Movie Description
Gary Cooper, a true Hollywood icon, stars as Lou Gehrig in 1942’s Pride of the Yankees, the story of one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, Bill Dickey and Mark Koenig, teammates of "The Iron Horse," appear as themselves.
Gehrig, an integral part of "Murderer’s Row," was only 37 when he was afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (later known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’). Gehrig had appeared in 2,130 consecutive games, and along with Ruth, formed baseball’s most-ever feared one-two punch.
The scene depicting Gehrig’s farewell speech at Yankee Stadium is well-known to any sports film fan, and ranks #38 on the American Film Institute’s list of Hollywood’s Greatest Film Quotes of all time.
Pride of the Yankees garnered eleven Academy Award nominations, winning the Oscar for Film Editing.
