Movie Description
The 1962 comedy film, Safe at Home! stars New York Yankee sluggers Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris as themselves. Filmed in the offseason after the magical 1961 season during which Maris (61 HR’s) and Mantle (54 HR’s) chased Babe Ruth’s record, Safe at Home! isn’t a cinematic masterpiece, but it does reflect an iconic moment in American sports history.
The "plot" revolves around a young boy who brags to his friends that his dad is friends with Mantle and Maris. When the boys’ pals "call him" on his claim, he sets about to make his "tall tale" come true in order to save face.
Mantle and Maris, although trying gamely, aren’t actors, and the supporting cast (William Frawley, Patricia Barry, Don Collier) isn’t given much in the way of material. Older viewers will instantly recognize Frawley from his role as Fred Mertz in "I Love Lucy."
