Movie Description
Based on the true story of major league baseball pitcher Monty Stratton, Jimmy Stewart shines in the title role of 1949’s The Stratton Story. Stewart and co-star June Allyson would go on to form a memorable Hollywood couple in two other films, The Glenn Miller and Strategic Air Command.
Monty Stratton was an up-and-coming pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, having won 15 games in both the 1937 and 1938 seasons. While on a hunting trip after the ’38 season, he accidentally shot himself in the leg, which eventually has to be amputated. Determined to return, he struggles gamely for many years until finally making a comeback in the minor leagues in 1946.
Sam Wood deftly directed, not surprising since he’d also directed Pride of the Yankees seven years earlier.
