Movie Description
Waking Up Wally: The Walter Gretzky Story is a 2005 CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) film production that relates the story of Walter Gretzky, ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky’s father.
After suffering a near-fatal stroke shortly after his 53rd birthday, Walter Gretzky lost his long-term memory. One of the startling after-effects of this condition left Gretzky unable to speak any language other than Ukranian.
The film follows Gretzky’s struggles to regain some sense of normalcy, and several "small" victories are presented realistically and touchingly, giving the film some needed "humanity," which it is absent "pre-stroke."
The film was adapted from the book, Walter Gretzky: On Family, Hockey and Healing, co-written by Gretzky and Carole Hay.
Cast members include Tom McCamus, Victoria Snow, Tara Spencer-Naim, Matthew Edison and Kris Holden-Ried.
