Movie Description
Every sports fan knows that Indiana boy’s high school basketball is a proverbial "big deal," but it may surprise some to learn that girl’s basketball in the Hoosier state is not too shabby. In The Winning Season, a sports drama, the girls get their turn in the spotlight.
Bill Greaves is stuck in a dead-end job when he gets a call from an old friend with the offer to coach the local high school’s girls basketball team. Reluctant, but figuring he has nothing to lose, he accepts the position. The arrangement begins badly, with both Greaves and the players having difficulty getting in synch. Slowly but surely, things start to turn around, and it appears that the team, perennial losers, may just make the playoffs.
Sam Rockwell, as Greaves, delivers a wonderful performance, learning as much, if not more about himself, as his team. James C. Strouse wrote and directed, with Margo Martindale, Rob Corddry and Emma Roberts rounding out the cast.
